Why do we know this? We think the Les Schwab Tire Center in Albany, Oregon tipped us off on this. They can check it for free.

It is obvious we still need to fix the problem of it dying while driving.

Need to cut new gaskets for the rear taillights so moisture will stay out.

Have new plywood freshly cut for trunk as the leak mad the existing plywood moldy and week. Now that the trunk leak is fixed, this is a definite wish-list item.

2025:

September 25-30: SVX is at Chilly’s Auto Repair, Tangent, Oregon for a long weekend for the staff to get to know it a little bit. Hopefully it kills the engine while driving so they can get a feel for that problem.

Fall:

When I drove it home from the “Antanae Job” in Salem, Oregon, it died while driving. Once in Salem, and then once as I approached my home neighborhood in Albany, Oregon. It also happened the day before.

I pulled it over and stuck it into park. Then it started right away, just as my son had described. So the final time I pre-planned in my mind to put it in neutral while still rolling and turn the key. It worked and I kept on driving. This made me feel like I would not have it served right away. I would drive it sparingly but like directly to work or other quick short trips. It was time to stop spending money on it for now.

Note: This means that the “Solenoid Wire” job was not successful after all. We could return it to Dennis Auto Repair to honor the work and the part (up to one year) but already, we never paid for that work anyway. So, we just want to be done. Tired of taking it for help and to have to go though all that.

New Strategy: Simply wait and pay the $179 for the inspection of the problem, at Capitol Subaru. Maybe even get a loaner vehicle for free. Fun. They once diagnosed, order the part on Ebay motors and have the art delivered to them. Pay them for the final repair and be done with it for just over $300. Make sense?

September:

Antennae:

After the transmission module job, we noticed the antennae was bent. After talking to family, we agreed that it had not been that way. Capitol Subaru checked their cameras and found that no one there had done it but agreed to disconnect the electric antennae for free as a courtesy. It was not connected to the new stereo system anyway, which has its own antennae.

We retuned again for them to snip or disconnect in a professional manner for after all we were trying to sell it and did not want this to seem too ghetto.

Once home we looked in the trunk and found that it already had a male/female disconnect for the antennae motor. Did they do this? If so, then that is nice to have this so professional; however, it had original red spray paint on part of it from the factory, so we think it was there the whole time, and they simply pressed it and disconnected the already established disconnect. Happy to have it disconnect in a professional way but not happy that it had been that way the whole time and could have disconnect it before it got bent.

This will remain a mystery but so disappointing for the antennae to no longer be perfectly straight, after thirty years, for it to happen now.

August:

Solenoid wire was replaced. This wire connects the starter to the solenoid. It makes sense that this was getting overheated and then would cause the car to not restart after a quick turning off after some errands and then wanting to restart again after turning off. Honestly this problem only happened to us once and ever since we strived to not take this car on a lot of stop, go, so, go type of errands.

Because it had been having trouble shifting out of first gear, the repair person did not charge us as he thought his attempt at a fix had caused other problems.

Thinking it would not drive, we had it towed over 25 miles to Capitol Subaru in Salem, Oregon. They have two mechanics that feel comfortable working on the SVX.

For a price, they confirmed that the solenoid job had worked but did not address the shifting problem. They said if I returned, they would check that for free.

When we returned it, we were given a new Subaru Legacy as a loaner vehicle. They quickly found that the problem needed the electrical specialist to hone-in on the problem, for a new price. We considered backing out, but it was obvious the smartest thing to do was to just get it done.

It was confirmed to be the transmission computer module, so we found one on Ebay motors and had it delivered to them.

This helped and suddenly the six cylinder SVX was riding to low RPMs at highway speeds. Before it was having trouble shifting from first to second gear and also had high RPMS over 40 miles per hour.

*****

June:

The Two Problem Connection:

We are still hoping that the motor dying while driving and the not starting after turning it off for only a few minutes, are related. A hot wire causing both?

May:

Parts Still On Order:

Son had the SVX die on him today while near his church. The same problem when it dies while driving. I called Dennis Automotive, and the parts are still on order. He said sometimes without any rhyme or reason, can take up to two months.

Strategy That Is Working:

Driving the SVX to its location and intending to be parked at that location longer than 43 minutes and it starts every time.

This means getting gas would be a hit or miss proposition because it only takes about five minutes.

Trunk Leak Mystery Solved:

April: On April 16th, we did return it to Possum Autobody. The following Sunday our contact told us that he fixed the final mystery leak. A bolt in the left side trunk hinge/harness had the wrong bolt in it. He shopped a new bolt and calked it. No leak. Just in time for the non-rainy season here in Oregon, but surely, we feel the closure. This has haunted us ever since it arrived from Florida in 2021.
