The SVX has had this problem since we bought it. If you don’t start it frequently, then it won’t start. The charge won’t last more than a few days.
It died again while at Chilly’s Subaru Auto Repair. We went to drive it home and then it was dead and we had nothing to jump it with. I called and told them, and they jumped it and got it ready. The next day…
We went back a day later to pick it up, again after hours, and it was dead, already.
So, we came back the next day, this time with a portable jump-starting kit. It started. I drove to get a full tank and then home. The next day it was dead.
This was too fast.
So now it will be dead after one day of non-use?
Did the mice in the engine mouse next chew a wire? But it has never been great, but why now down to just one day after charging?
Why does this 1994 SVX have so many issues? Our 1997 Subaru Impreza is so dependable, which had perfect maintenance all these years. maybe the SVX didn’t. Hadn’t…
So, I had purchased a UNOCHO Automatic Battery Charger from Les Schwab, a month prior. I wanted to return it because it turns out it maintains a battery to stay full, meaning plugged in for a while. It turns out after some research that this is meant for keeping a battery in a stored car, fresh. But all I needed was a quick portable charger and then be sure to start it within three days.
But now it won’t stay charged for more than a day, so I hooked it up today.
Picture of the Unocho battery charger, pending…
BATTERY CHARGER UPDATE
We wondered if we wasted our money because it couldn’t charge the battery if it was already dead. But once charged by our portable jump starter kit, this Unocho charger did maintain it. Instead of not starting after three days, it will start now.
CHARGER MISHAP: WARNING
On November 9, 2025, we backed out of the driveway, and something was very wrong. It just seemed wrong. Was something wrong with the car? Yes, the battery charger was dragging on the ground. We had unplugged the charger from the extension cord, but we had not disconnected the battery charger from the car.
Fortunately, as we were backing up it was in front of the SVX and then when we pulled forward it was under the car. Amazing that we did not crush it.
Note: We keep the charger under the car to protect it from the rain.
Note: The charger is on the ground plugged into the extension cord. The wire from it goes up the front of the car by the left headlight. We have left the hood ajar, so the wire fits in on its way to the battery.
