Let’s follow a history of this de-conversion. Let’s learn.

Growing up in the church; raised as a Christian. Enters ministry as a musician. Conviction of singing Christian anthems to the masses, when he himself had doubts.

The opinion of our wise Oregon point of contact, our expert on Christianity and Apologetics, feels that this path Steingard is on likely leads to coming back to the faith of Christianity even stronger.

Apologetics is the study of proving Christ…

P.O.C. Quote:

Yeah, his issue seems to be more of an emotional one. The problem of evil is a big stumbling block for people, but I think the key is to get past the initial emotional block and start asking deeper questions like:

Why do we assume that God *hasn’t* reduced evil in the world? Couldn’t things be a lot worse? Maybe he already got rid of 90%; if he reduced it 90% more would I still be complaining about it?

Would it be better to live in a world where people have no free will to do good or evil? Would such a world remove the meaningfulness of selfless sacrifice (since there would be no alternative), or completely do away with positive things that depend on evil, like grace and forgiveness?

Does the fact that I even have a concept of real evil to complain about (and not just a subjective opinion about how I’d like the world to be) indicate that there really is a standard of good in the universe, and if there is, where does it come from?

Do I have to know the answer to these questions with complete certainty before coming to a conclusion that God probably exists, and if so why don’t I apply that standard to everything else that I claim to know? (Like “my wife loves me and isn’t just playing a decades-long elaborate trick on me.”)

It seems to me that thinking about these things honestly leads one toward and not away from the conclusion that there’s a God out there that is the foundation of morality.

He’s probably at the point where he needs emotional support to get through that bit so that he can come back around. Hopefully Sean  will stay in touch with him.
If he came back around and rejoined Hawk Nelson, think how meaty the lyrics would be!
That would be REAL!

Sean, is Sean McDowell, who discussed this with Steingard on the Unbelievable Podcast.
