Back to Dining (Washington)…
Index, Washington (Gold Bar, Washington)
Harry and the Henderson’s, one of the most successful Bigfoot movies ever made, was in part, filmed in Index, Washington, or was it? Let’s take a look.
IMDb – Harry and the Hendersons
Let’s see some of the things celebrated in Index:
Turn off Highway 2 and when you hit a dead end, you are there.
A forested drive, and then giant mountains.
Mysterious lost objects…
Korean food, anyone?
But what about Bigfoot? What about the strong heritage that celebrates that Harry and the Henderson’s was filmed there?
Fortunately, we met David at the museum, and he knew that we needed to back the way we came, one mile back to Highway 2, and then two miles east to the Klein’s coffee shop. He said they have the new Bigfoot statue; he included, that they try not to do much Bigfoot stuff in Index because they don’t want to take anything away from the Klein’s efforts. We thought this seemed very courteous, and yet made us more curious. So we were off, the search continues.
Now, we get back onto Highway 2, and heading east , we start to see a sign of what we came for. The Klien’s coffee shop was called the Espresso Chalet.

Trip Advisor – Espresso Chalet
This Facebook and Trip Advisor have some good photos and information.
The Espresso Chalet is now the home of Harry Henderson.
Wow, this guy was big…
Notice in the background something you see in the below link, in Roadside America:
It did feel like a Bigfoot Park, and the Espresso Chalet had a wide variety of drinks, food, and souvenirs.
The green building was in the movie, when John Lithgow goes to talk to Don Ameche, the Bigfoot expert. Now used just for employees, but the door window shares the history of that moment.
The Espresso Chalet was also was amazing, the Coffee House, at this monument. They were busy so we did not talk to the workers; however, we did give a business card when an employee had to step out of the work-space. We complimented them on doing such a great job.
Bigfoot parking signs, Bigfoot carvings, back patio serving area, merchandise of commemorative Harry magnets, colorful Harry t-shirts, hoodies, and more.
If anyone has been to Index and can share more about Bigfoot stores, restaurants, or a tribute to the movie Harry and the Henderson’s, please “Contact the Eruption.” The research continues.
Our thanks to Janet and her friends, who first brought this to our attention. One of the positives that came from our first Bigfoot Eruption event in Independence, Oregon, July 4, 2018.
