First their was David Shipton, who found a possible Yeti track in this area. Then the research of Daniel Taylor, author of Yeti: The Ecology of a Mystery. Both, helped put this area on the map as a possible Yeti location. The led to the creation of the Makula-Barun National Park, also an effort led by Daniel Taylor.
