Our Dell just got attacked, “You cannot use this Computer until you call this number!”
It had an annoying alert sound, and a scary voice that would not stop.
We were being held hostage, so we called the number, as we gave the guy with a foreign accent a hard time about how we were finding it hard to trust him.
Nothing against workers doing a great job from other countries, but sadly much of the scamming is also outsourced.
Other members of Bigfoot Eruption prayed during this creepy encounter.
He wanted to be able to have remote access, and when we gave it to him, he showed us the junk that caused the alarm. Alarm provided by Microsoft Detector, so he says. So an alarm that “alarms” but offers no protection? This felt all wrong.
He tried to sell us his firewall protection, which would have given him our credit card number, but we said we would have our local computer shop do it. He said our local guy can’t do it. (??)
We thanked him, and said said we would research options, and buy the software protection at the store. He said, “It’s not a software.”. Then my computer rebooted, scary. But the hostage warning went away.
The internet and our computer guy says it was a scam. A classic scam. Online, it had it word for word.
Right now we have shut down that laptop. Online research, and the computer guy said this: to shut it down, but now waiting for what is next?
Restoring the computer to an earlier date, looks to be too tricky for us, so tomorrow we must take it to the local trusted computer repair. Everyone is making money except us? (April 20, 2022)
